From its very beginning, the film welcomes us in an unusual, sealed up world where magical powers prevail over reason and folk wisdom prevails over science. A mystifying world where the heroes dream of wedding veils flying at night over empty highways, are capable of leaving their whole house hanging in the air by a rope or watch their legs leave the ground for a while and float over it.
In the center of this surreal world begins the story of a small tragedy, which encloses the much alive genuine passion that permeates the heroes, entangling gypsies traditions and the purity that governs this peculiar people with the film elements of fine poetry and magical realism.
Director under the influence of the sweetest intoxication, Kusturica emits heat and fever through the colors of photography, arouses with the resurrecting tunes and the cataclysmic impact emerging from the lyrical music of Goran Bregovic, provokes sob and sudden emotion through a pagan at times feast of the heart and eye contact. The film was honored with the Best Director Award in Cannes Film Festival and is one of the top creations of the 80's. Loukas Katsikas
