16th AOAFF powered by DEI: The "horror" tradition that became a cult favorite
When, more than a decade ago, the Athens Open Air Film Festival first envisioned the beautiful Plato’s Academy Park as a venue for open-air film screenings, none of us could have imagined such a warm response.
And when, a few years ago, the Athens Open Air Film Festival established its now-famous all-night horror movie marathons there, none of us could have anticipated such an impressive turnout—or such an enthusiastic atmosphere.
And yet, last Saturday, you once again turned out in force for one of our favorite cinematic traditions. This time, it was for the 16th Athens Open Air Film Festival powered by DEI and an irresistible all-night programme featuring Martin Scorsese’s Cape Fear, the original horror classic Friday the 13th, and a hidden gem of the genre - virtually unknown in Greece until the other night - entitled Island of the Damned.
Aside from your remarkable numbers—which once again appeared to be close to 1,000 people, although it was impossible to count every single one of you—we must also say that you were, once again, an exceptional audience: engaged, enthusiastic and generous with your applause, while remaining friendly and considerate despite the large crowd gathered around you.
We would therefore like to thank you once again for keeping us company throughout this cinematic marathon. We would also like to extend our warmest thanks to ART OF SOUND for the screenings’ outstanding audiovisual quality, presented in 4K resolution—something virtually unheard of for open-air screenings in Greece.
For fans of back-to-back screenings, our next date is the delightfully madcap double feature on Saturday, July 25, when we will screen the legendary comedies Airplane! and Top Secret! on the Dionysiou Areopagitou pedestrian street.
With the delicious experience of Elite.
The 16th Athens Open Air Film Festival powered by DEI is co-organized by the City of Athens Culture, Sports and Youth Organization.
