The efforts of a washed-up alcoholic lawyer to bring to justice those responsible for the medical abuse of a woman turn into a one-man persistent crusade of morality and personal atonement. The screenplay is written by David Mamet who offers a lot of twists and dramatically powerful scenes as he masterfully unravels the story. The story is directed with tremendous attentiveness to the plot, the characters and the winter setting by the creator of «Serpico» and «Dog Day Afternoon». The leading role is performed by a wonderful Paul Newman, in one of his two or three top appearances in the cinema.
The result of all the above is an exciting judicial drama about the moving fight that a simple and rather condemned man puts on against powerful forces that exceed him and his request for one more chance in life. The film, which is one of the top among the 80’s filmography, got five Oscar nominations.
