Amidst the 90s decade “Before Sunrise” will appear timidly, as a transcription of Eric Rohmer's exquisite movie lexicon in the language of the american indie. Nobody was expecting, not even its three main contributors, that this brief meeting between Jesse and Celine would evolve into the most beloved work in progress ever presented in modern cinema. Each sequel progresses the previous film, while at the same time transforms it, as Linklater, Delpy and Hawke treat the love affair of their two protagonists as a living organism. “Before Sunrise” is never again the same after “Before Midnight”, precisely because you watch it knowing the after. Only the “after” needed the “before” to exist.
In Jesse and Celine we do not find an ideal couple, not even the average couple, they are a special case of a couple. We find, however, those common features that concern every couple, the differences and the similarities, the personal and the common dreams, the effect of time on them and, of course, the backlog, with which each film ends. There is no definitive and comprehensive answer as to what makes our life beautiful, but the backlog is a good reply, as you will find out by watching this marvelous trilogy at a unique screening.
