Marked by the conservative circles and the FBI itself as a film maudit, undesirable because of its leftist views and its use of free love and radical politics as opposed to the american status quo of that time, “Zabriskie Point” was rather destined to fail in revenue. Yet, the first and only as it turned out american film of the great Antonioni was at the heart of its time, capturing, like few other films, the pulse of a period of prolonged dispute, acute political polarization and social unrest in the U.S., during which the struggles for political rights and against the war in Vietnam found their cultural articulation under the counterculture movement.

Looking at it from a safe distance of over fifty years, “Zabriskie Point” now seems like the natural heir to the throbbing “Blow Up” in terms of the psychedelic evolution of the swinging 60s. Through Daria and Mark’s libertarian adventure which consistently involves love and conflict vs the establishment, the borderline cursed film of the Italian maitre still offers delirious levels of climax that remain emblematiC, one being the outboasting scene of the explosion under the deafening sounds of Pink Floyd and of course that unforgettable love scene at the dunes in the Valley of Death.
