THE POSTER
Creative Rationale from the visual communication designer, Vassilis Mexis:
«The poster for the 16th Athens Open Air Film Festival powered by DEI serves as an “open invitation” to an urban oasis, using the visual motif of water and the Festival’s name as part of a mosaic-like background.
The specially designed mosaic tiles lettering and its distortion through the ripples of the water arouse a sense of freshness, yearning, and relaxation.
The timeless, Mediterranean feel of the mosaic and its psychedelic depiction through the ripples of the water create an image that bridges the retro with the contemporary.
This reflects the Festival’s film identity, which combines classic masterpieces with contemporary discoveries from cinema around the world, and conveys its core values: intimacy, artistic freedom, inclusivity, and the celebration of cinema as an integral part of Athenian summer life».

The 16th Athens Open Air Film Festival powered by DEI brings ZIGGY STARDUST at the Zappeion Megaron!
The Festival celebrates the ATHENS PRIDE and honors David Bowie with a screening not to miss: the legendary documentary “ZIGGY STARDUST AND THE SPIDERS FROM MARS” (1979), for the first time in Greece in its complete and latest digitally restored form. The screening will take place on Wednesday, June 10th at the dazzling courtyard of Zappeion, at 21h15.
On July 3, 1973, at the packed Hammersmith Odeon in London and at the height of one of his most successful tours, David Bowie announced to his astonished audience that he was performing for the last time as Ziggy Stardust, symbolically “killing” on stage the androgynous, otherworldly persona that had made him the idol of an entire era. D. A. Pennebaker was there; he filmed the entire concert as well as backstage footage, and in doing so managed to preserve one of the most legendary moments in the history of rock - a priceless document of an artist of seismic power during the most spectacular and adventurous period of his career.
The 16th Athens Open Air Film Festival powered by DEI presents the nationwide premiere of the complete version of the legendary documentary, featuring brand-new digital image and sound processing, as well as 13 extra minutes that viewers will have the chance to see for the first time. Exactly ten years after he began his final and far journey to the stars, this screening serves as a tribute to the one and only David Bowie, the first artist who, among so many other heroic achievements, defiantly brought gender fluidity, queer aesthetics, drag, and non-binary identity to the forefront of pop culture.
