As early as his childhood years, the great Swedish artist had an intense desire to work with Mozart’s famous opera. With Sven Nykvist’s vital contribution, who was not only Bergman’s loyal colleague, but also an acclaimed photography director with collaborations on both sides of the Atlantic (ranging from “The Sacrifice” by Tarkovsky, the “Crimes and Misdemeanors” by Allen to “The Tenant” by Polanski), the legendary Swedish auteur managed to present a hybrid piece of work, which matched the ambiance of the theatrical stage and the grandeur of an opera spectacle to the film experience and aesthetic.
Bergman’s magic touch on Mozart’s classic masterpiece upholds the lightly humorous dimension which characterizes the original libretto. However, his “Magic Flute” is distinguished for its ornate and delicate political tint, as well as its reflective orientation.
