On the 18th of May, 1955 one of America’s most compelling films was released. The film «Kiss me Deadly» started as a tortuous crime story before culminating in a complete holocaust. Its main character is a fascist-ish private investigator and its plot unveils around the quest for a cherished Pandora’s box full of deadly secrets.
The director of the film, Robert Aldrich, crafted an improvised film bomb, set to explode at the very last minute, sending the pulp literature pages of Mickey Spillane, the film noir, the nuclear hysteria of the time, the demolition of any political correctness, the shadow of the Cold War and the most nihilistic view on the world that surrounds us to blow in the faces of the most unwary audience. Filmed outside a studio, costing 400.000 dollars and in three weeks time, the result was a brutal and unconventional film which would never find a resemblance. Unthinkable for the time of its birth, the film remains more contemporary than ever. Loukas Katsikas
