In June 1989, right before its commercial release, a group of critics predicted that Spike Lee's masterpiece would cause riots, if not sparkle a full-on revolution, due to its controversial subject-matter.
In the end, none of their predictions came true and "Do the Right Thing" went on to become one of the most timeless films in American cinema, telling the story of a multi-cultural neighborhood in Brooklyn that descends into violence on a suffocatingly hot summer day.
Hidden behind the colorful, multi-ethnic cast of characters that Lee's imagination concocted, Public Enemy's provocative "Fight the Power" blasting from the speakers and the conflicting references to Martin Luther King and Malcolm X, "Do the Right Thing" was an incomparable combination of comedy and drama, a timely, ingenious study of the delicate interracial balance that both unites and divides the human race, turning America into a ticking time bomb.
