Chance (Peter Sellers) is a middle-aged gardener who has lived his entire life in the mansion of a wealthy older gentleman in Washington and has never known the outside world, except for what he's seen on TV. When his employer dies, Chance dons his boss' expensive clothes and wanders the city for the very first time.
After a car accident, Chance meets Senator Ben (Melvyn Douglas) and his wife Eve (Shirley MacLaine) and his life is turned upside down to the point where he's a hair's breadth away from becoming the president of the United States!
