The Photograph
In the film “The Photograph”, the Ethiopia-born Nikos Papatakis illustrates the gloom that shadowed his country of origin during the junta period, through the mirror of nostalgia and the loneliness of immigration.
The second to last of Papatakis’ movies stands among the top creations of the Greek cinema and, despite the fact that it takes place mostly in Paris, it consists of one of the most insightful filmic glances ever fallen onto the wounded modern Greek history.

In the film “The Photograph”, the Ethiopia-born Nikos Papatakis illustrates the gloom that shadowed his country of origin during the junta period, through the mirror of nostalgia and the loneliness of immigration.
It is the story of Ilias (starring Aris Retsos), a young man from Kastoria, who is driven away by the weight of a leftist family past. He decides to make a fresh start in Paris and goes there to find Gerasimos, a distant relative from his mother’s side.
His only luggage is a photograph of an unidentified woman, whom he introduces to Gerasimos as his sister. However, this seemingly insignificant innocent lie initiates a series of dramatic events.
