The story of Yip Man is one of the details of a period tableau, which is depicted on screen as an abstract visual feast of moments and attempts to run through two decades of Chinese history and bloody invasions, civil wars, personal tragedies and uprootings.

Even then, however, it'd be too rushed to call the film a historical drama and too superficial to call it a traditional martial arts adventure. Like a feverish dream you fall into ever-dumbfounded, leaving your objections aside, the film is choreographed around two characters who can defy the laws of gravity, but not the heart's mysterious yearnings or fate's unexpected twists, and muses on the passing of time and the incomplete part in a life.
