The Great White Silence
“The Great White Silence” (1924) recounts, through the lens of the pioneer filmmaker Harold Ponting, the story of the Terra Nova Expedition, which was led by the British explorer Robert Falcon Scott.
Ιon, also known as Yiannis Papaioannou, as the alternative explorer of the possibilities of sound and electronic avant-garde that he is, takes charge of “dressing-up musically” - and of course, live - “The Great White Silence”, one of the most beautiful cinema imprints of the exploration of the wild – and unexplored back then (1924) – natural resources of Antarctica. Following last year's event presented by Cayetano, who composed from scratch a soundtrack in order to dress clips from Harold Lloyd's films, Ιon has prepared his asymmetrical dancing minors that will bring out a completely different prospect of exploration – with music – into the gorgeous world of Antarctica.
“The Great White Silence” (1924) recounts, through the lens of the pioneer filmmaker Harold Ponting, the story of the Terra Nova Expedition, which was led by the British explorer Robert Falcon Scott. The documentary presents the journey towards Antarctica and the struggle of the explorer and the Terra Nova's crew to conquer the South Pole, starting from the moment the ship sets sail from New Zealand in order to travel through the Southern Ocean and reach Earth's great frozen parts. The director follows the men of the mission as they set up their camp – safe in the icy coast of Ross Island – and spend their leisure time by playing with the penguins, skiing and preparing their course through the Pole. The film ends with a scene showing the four officials explorers setting off from their base for the big journey, towards the center of Antarctica, reminding this way the audience of 1924 of the tragic outcome of this mission. Scott and his three comrades never returned alive from the South Pole.
