In his anxious search for a woman, who might not even be alive, a mysterious man ends up at an isolated villa, on a night of severe storm. Being wounded he is harbored by the two strange women that just buried a body in the backyard of their gothic estate. They offer him shelter from the rain, but the apparent kindness of these two strangers is quickly transformed to an orgy ritual of sadomasochism and exceedance of any sort of limit regarding both the hero and the audience.
A film like no other in the history of greek cinema, "Singapore Sling" remains, thirty years after its first turbulent premiere in the movie theaters, what it was from the start: one of the most seductively directed works ever generated in the domestic cinema, a non-negotiably personal work with force operating as a terrorist act against unprepared and conservative audiences, but also a visitation of ghosts. Here Otto Preminger's "Laura" is talking, under the candle lights, to Marquis de Sade, the black and white monsters of Universal emerge from the dark waters of the most cursed romance and a deeply desperate vision of our world is "alleviated" with morbid humor and cannibalistic mood.
"Singapore Sling" is the type of bold movie that very few directors would ever dare sign, especially today that cinema as a whole is submitted again to the tortures of neo-puritanism and whichever political correctness. Nikolaidis attempted it, the top director of contemporary greek cinema, leaving as his sardonic legacy a film-electroshock. Conflicting, convulsive, charming through its violent contradictions and impossible to forget. Loukas Katsikas
