France, May 1968. When Milou's mother dies, the numerous members of the Vieuzac family are gathered in the french province for her funeral. As the shocking news about the student upheaval in Paris and a strike sabotage their plans, the relatives, undaunted, revive old disputes and come up with new ones concerning inheritance matters, while at the same time an unexpected (and undesirable) love is born within the family's bay.
Without ever illustrating the events of May '68, that shaked France and not only, Louis Malle creates a charming micro-world of the french society in the end of the 60s, who, like the family in the film which seems to be drawn to chaos after the loss of the woman who was keeping the balance, is incapable of conceiving the cosmogonic change taking place around him.
Observing with discrete humor the erratic behaviors of his characters, Louis Malle orchestrates a refined farce-comedy on the end of an era and the deceitful tranquility of an idyllic past, right before everything is overturned. Anniversary screening for the 30 years since the film's premiere and a least pay of the Festival's respect to the unequalled Michel Piccoli, who passed away recently. Thanasis Patsavos
