Once Jean marries the beautiful peasant girl Juliette, he takes her along his boat, the Atalante, and to the promise of a quiet life filled with love. Two more sailors and the endless river complete their romantic company. But just as the boat passes through Paris, Juliette will run away in order to experience the tension and pleasures of the big city, leaving Jean wandering smitten.
Is "L' Atalante" a realistic social drama or a romantic fantasy? Simply a magical dive into a mysterious, lost world. A seductive film, the only feature directed by Jean Vigo, who died a few days after its completion, without ever watching it on screen and without imagining that in the coming decades it would be voted among the most significant creations of world cinema. The film will be screened in a recently restored digital print.
Screening of the film’s restored print, on the occasion of the French National Day, in collaboration with the PleinAir Festival by the French Institute of Greece
