A child's candid friendship with an alien represents the spirit of the early ‘80s in the purest way, and Steven Spielberg, at his most intimate moment, delivers a self-referential masterpiece of surprisingly grounded science fiction. With a camera standing reactively at the height of a minor, in an attempt to find the primordial cohesive element that constitutes humanity, namely communication, "E.T." heals the wounds from the ‘70s and unites a global audience in one family.
The best film Disney never made borrows the narrative flair of the classic fairy tale and messianism elements of a universal faith. Traumatic "ouches" will be healed by touch, salvation from the brink will come like a flying ride on the moon and Spielberg, feeding the juvenile inescapable sense of adventure, will render the miracle as an innocent, childhood experience. The two friends will experience the unbearable pain of adult intervention and will eventually reach "home" only through a redemptive goodbye. And "E.T." will be there to remind us that the journey into fantasy will have emotion as its eternal homeland. Panos Gkenas
